Recovery

Red deer were introduced into New Zealand in the mid to late 1800s and are now found across both the North and South Islands.   The commercial recovery and export of venison from wild-caught deer began in about 1958.

Since then Helicopters have been used to cull and control the feral deer population in the rugged NZ mountains. The commercial red deer harvest industry has remained remarkably resilient in New Zealand, however the demand for wild deer is largely influenced
by the ability of farmed deer to supply the venison market. Because of a current shortage of farmed deer, the demand for wild deer has increased.

Unfortunately the deer population has exploded in some areas meaning farmers need to take action to protect their land and other stock. We are able to offset the cost of eradication to the farmer by utilising our supply contracts for wild venison and ensuring these animals don’t go to waste.
